Nervous Excitement

Inside The Acorn Series

Hi everyone,

My name is Paola Di Clemente, and as of Thursday, May 3rd I am officially Graf-Martin Communications’ first publicity intern! Let me back track a little bit and tell you how I was blessed to get this amazing opportunity.

I completed my undergraduate degree at McMaster University in both English and Communications Studies. I’ve always loved reading, however, in my last year of studies I really found myself gravitating towards my Communications Studies courses, especially those surrounding media and promotionalism. I enjoyed my time at MAC and really liked living in the Hammer but I knew I would need some sort of practical education to be successful in whatever future career I would land in. After carefully researching postgraduate education options, and speaking to several girlfriends who had taken the public relations program at Humber College, I knew it would be a good fit for me.

The program is amazing! I learned more in that eight-month period than I did in my entire undergraduate career. The teachers are amazing and the curriculum is practical, yet challenging. As part of the program we are required to complete a two-month internship over the summer months before graduation in the fall. While Humber provides students access to an internship opportunity online portal, students can also set up their own internships, if they meet the qualifications.  While there were some cool opportunities at some really amazing companies on the portal, I knew Graf-Martin Communications was the place for me.

I connected with Ellen Graf-Martin in the summer of 2011, before beginning the public relations program and was inspired by her passion for her work, and proved to be a true example of using your God-given gifts to do the work of the Kingdom.

The eight-week program was intense, and I know I’ve learned a lot, but I’m excited for the opportunity to put that knowledge into practice and learn how public relations “works” in a real agency.

It is my hope that this blog will keep readers apprised of my progress, but also provide some insight into what actually goes on in this agency.
